More than 12 whales have died, caught on a beach in New Zealand

More than a dozen whales have died in New Zealand after being caught on a beach on the country’s North Island, the Department of Environmental Protection said on Sunday.

Rescuers and volunteers worked all day Saturday to return to the water more than 25 whales out of 40 to 50 that were stuck earlier that day on the beach of the Coromandel Peninsula, according to Reuters.

“Unfortunately, about a dozen whales died after being caught on rocks this morning. Despite this, we were encouraged by the fact that most of the trapped whales rejoined the group this morning and returned to the deep waters,” the statement added.
