Three people were killed and Another 18 people were wounded, some of them in serious condition, after gunmen opened fire on six different locations in the city center on Monday evening.
The police shot one of the attackers and arrested another. At least one attacker remains on the run. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz described what happened as a “hateful terrorist attack”.
The attack occurred just hours before Austria imposed new restrictions to try to stem the increase in cases of coronavirus.
Many people were enjoying bars and restaurants that will remain closed until the end of November under the new restrictions.
Police said the attack began near Vienna’s main synagogue, but it was not clear if the synagogue was the target.

Austrian Interior Minister Karl Niehammer said, “It is the most difficult day for Austria in many years. We are dealing with a terrorist attack, the intensity of which has not been witnessed for a long time in Austria.”
